Description

Cenni storici:
Il pinco era una nave particolarmente diffusa nella marineria ligure dal XVIII secolo ai primi del XlX ed aveva una portata massima di circa 300 tonnellate.
Era normalmente armato con tre alberi a vele latine sostituite solo in caso di cattivo tempo da vele quadre all’albero di maestra e di trinchetto. La scialuppa di salvataggio era solitamente trainata a rimorchio. La caratteristica principale del pinco era infatti quella di compiere il massimo carico possibile ed a tale scopo le merci venivano stivate anche in coperta e persino appese fuori bordo (particolarmente le botti).
Il pinco compiva viaggi solo nel Mediterraneo e senza allontanarsi mai troppo dalla costa.
L’albero di mezzana era spostato a sinistra della mezzeria nave per permettere di manovrare la barra del timone.
Con bel tempo e vento favorevole il pinco era una nave molto veloce e manovriera tanto vero che spesso corsari e pirati liguri la armavano con bocche da fuoco per assalire le navi inglesi che si avventuravano nel Mediterraneo attraverso lo stretto di Gibilterra.

History:
Pinco Genovese was typical of the ships used by the Ligurian Navy in the Mediterranean from the middle of the 18th to the early 19th century. With a capacity of 300 tons, the vessel was set up with a three-masted lateen sail format and this was only replaced in bad weather with a square sail system. The huge expanses of sails allowed them to out-run the enemy and a battery of cannon often assured victory in naval conflict.To enhance the speed of the Pinco, goods were also covered, and even stowed away on board (particularly the barrels).
The Pinco only travelled in the Mediterranean and often close to the coast. The mizzen mast was moveable to the left of mid-line mast set-up to allow maximum use of the tiller. With good weather and favourable wind, the Pinco was a highly manoeuvrable and fast ship. Often the Ligurian pirates armed themselves with guns to attack the British ships that ventured into the Mediterranean through the Straits of Gibraltar.
